NATO Allies and partners reaffirm their firm support to Ambassador Khalilzad’s continued efforts towards lasting peace in Afghanistan
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg met with the United States Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation, Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad, at NATO Headquarters on Wednesday (5 June 2019). Ambassador Khalilzad also briefed all 41 NATO Allies and Resolute Support Mission operational partners on his latest efforts in support for peace in Afghanistan.

Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced on Wednesday (5 December 2018) that he has appointed Sir Nicholas Kay of the United Kingdom as the next NATO Senior Civilian Representative in Afghanistan. Mr. Stoltenberg made the announcement following a meeting of Foreign Ministers on the NATO-led Resolute Support Mission.

An Afghan Executive Senior Leader Seminar (ESLS) took place in Belgium from 15 to 19 October, 2018 at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers in Europe (SHAPE) and NATO Headquarters. The seminar was part of NATO’s Defence Education Enhancement Programme (DEEP) with Afghanistan.

A pilot course on civilian oversight of the armed forces (COAF) involving Afghan experts took place from 17 to 21 September 2018 at the ADA University in Baku, Azerbaijan. NATO Deputy Secretary General Rose Gottemoeller opened the event and chaired the graduation ceremony.

Today (2 September, 2018), General Austin Scott Miller assumed command of the NATO-led Resolute Support Mission from General John ''Mick'' Nicholson at a ceremony at mission headquarters in Kabul, Afghanistan. General Miller will oversee the continued efforts by NATO Allies and operational partners to further develop effective and sustainable Afghan security forces and institutions through the train, advise and assist mission.

NATO Allies and partners are staying the course in their support to the financial sustainment of the Afghan security forces. At the yearly plenary meeting of the Afghan National Army (ANA) Trust Fund Board, held today (Tuesday, 29 May 2018) at NATO Headquarters, they reviewed – together with representatives of the donor community – the Trust Fund management arrangements and implementation.
