Mediterranean Dialogue

Background

NATO’s Mediterranean Dialogue was initiated in 1994 by the North Atlantic Council. It currently involves seven non-NATO countries of the Mediterranean region: Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia.

NATO supports Mauritania in enhancing its crisis management system

Mauritania, like other countries in the Sahel region, is confronted with many security challenges, ranging from trafficking to terrorism. The crisis management centre implemented through the NATO Science for Peace and Security Programme (SPS) can contribute to the fight against these threats. The system could also serve as a model for the neighbouring countries and regional organisations which have shown interest in this innovative centre.

NATO Deputy Secretary General participates in the Rome Mediterranean Dialogues

NATO Deputy Secretary General Rose Gottemoeller visited Rome on Friday (1 December) to participate in this year’s MED-Mediterranean Dialogues, addressing security challenges facing the Middle East and North Africa. Speaking on a panel with officials from Morocco, Turkey, and the UK, she emphasised the importance of cooperation for securing peace in the region.

NATO and Israel sign agreement on the protection of exchanged classified information

On 14 November 2017, NATO and the State of Israel concluded the Administrative Arrangements for the protection of classified information as part of a Security Agreement initially signed in 2001.
