NATO hosts review of Afghan defence education programme

A group of high-level experts gathered at NATO Headquarters in Brussels, Belgium to conduct a review of the Defence Education Enhancement Programme (DEEP) Afghanistan from 19 to 22 February 2018. Programme reviews are held on an annual basis to take stock of progress achieved, address challenges faced, and set objectives for the future.

NATO Secretary General: Jordan is a key partner, contributing to regional stability

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg praised Jordan’s contributions to regional and international security during an official visit to Amman on Tuesday (6 March 2018). Meeting with Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, the Secretary General stressed that NATO remains committed to the international fight against terrorism, and to working with Jordan to make the region more secure.

NATO Secretary General visits Iraq, praises Allied trainers and Iraqi forces

Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg began an official visit to Iraq on Monday (5 March 2018), paying a visit to NATO’s training facilities in Besmaya. For over a year, NATO has conducted training and capacity building activities for hundreds of Iraqi security forces, helping them to develop their own capabilities in the fight against terrorism.

NATO Assistant Secretary General Alvargonzález and European Commission Deputy Director General Popowski visit Skopje

NATO’s Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs and Security Policy, Ambassador Alejandro Alvargonzález, and the European Commission’s Deputy Director General of Neighbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations of the European Commission, Maciej Popowski, visited Skopje together on 1 and 2 March 2018. They held meetings with Foreign Minister Nikola Dimitrov and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Radmila Sekerinska, Minister of Justice Bilen Saljiji, Minister of Interior Oliver Spasovski and Deputy Prime Minister for the EU Bujar Osmani. They also met representatives of civil society organisations, the Security Principals and the EU and NATO ambassadors. Both Ambassador Alvargonzález and Deputy Director General Popowski expressed support for the Euro-Atlantic perspective of the country.

Inaugural Meeting of the NATO Military Committee Working Group on Strategic Communications

On 1 & 2 March 2018, the NATO International Military Staff hosted the first official Military Committee Working Group (MCWG) on Strategic Communications (StratCom). The 29 Allied Nations were invited to attend and share their perspectives on StratCom. They received briefings from senior military and civilian experts from the NATO International Military Staff, the NATO Public Diplomacy Division, SHAPE and ACT as well from the Director of the StratCom Centre of Excellence and several Allied Nations. The Director General of the NATO International Military Staff (DGIMS), Lieutenant General Jan Broeks officially opened the meeting on 1st March.

Deputy Secretary General commends Greece for contributions to NATO

Deputy Secretary General Rose Gottemoeller began her first official visit to Greece on Thursday (1 March 2018), meeting with Greek officials and delivering a keynote address on the enduring importance of NATO. In remarks at the Delphi Economic Forum, Ms. Gottemoeller set out the Alliance’s essential role in a more uncertain world, highlighting the value of Allies’ collective efforts and outlining priorities in preparation for the NATO Summit in July. She also thanked Greece for its contributions to NATO activities, and for meeting the 2% defence investment pledge.

NATO Military Committee visit Allied Command Transformation in Portugal

From 26 to 28 February 2018, at the invitation of General Denis Mercier, Supreme Allied Commander Transformation (SACT), the Military Committee travelled to Allied Command Transformation’s (ACT) subcommand, the Joint Analysis and Lessons Learned Centre (JALLC) in Monsanto, Portugal. The Military Committee also took the opportunity to visit the Naval Striking and Support Forces NATO (STRIKFORNATO) Headquarters. Furthermore, General Petr Pavel, Chairman of the Military Committee and General Mercier met with the Minister of Defence, H. E. Mr. Jose Alberto de Azeredo Lopes and the Portuguese Chief of Defence, General Artur Pina Monteiro.

Improving gender equality in Georgia’s armed forces

As the armed forces of various countries open up more positions to women, striving for gender equality and reducing barriers for the meaningful participation of women in the military is increasingly important. The Science for Peace and Security (SPS) Programme supports a project to improve the conditions of women in Georgia’s armed forces.

NATO Secretary General commends Croatia for Support to Euro-Atlantic aspirations of Balkan Neighbours

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg welcomed the Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković to NATO Headquarters on Thursday (22 February 2018) to discuss preparations for the Summit in July and regional cooperation in the Western Balkans.
