NATO Secretary General addresses German cabinet at Schloss Meseberg

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg thanked Germany for its vital contributions to the Alliance in talks with the new German cabinet, led by Chancellor Angela Merkel, on Tuesday (10 April 2018). Speaking at Schloss Meseberg, the German government’s retreat outside Berlin, Mr Stoltenberg praised Germany’s leadership of a multinational battlegroup in Lithuania and its decision to add more than 300 troops to the NATO-led Resolute Support Mission to train, advise and assist the Afghan security forces.

NATO Trust Fund improves services to amputees in Ukraine

NATO is helping improve medical services for amputees in the Ukrainian armed forces through a new two-year programme at the Prosthetic and Orthotic (P&A) Institute in Kharkiv. Funded by NATO’s medical rehabilitation Trust Fund for Ukraine, the bachelor-level programme will help raise the level of medical services for amputees to international standards. The number of amputees in Ukraine has grown significantly in recent years, due to the conflict in the eastern part of the country.

NATO Secretary General visits NORAD and NORTHCOM in Colorado

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg wrapped up a three-day visit to the United States on Friday (6 April 2018) with a visit to North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and US Northern Command (NORTHCOM) in Colorado. Accompanied by Canadian Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan, the Secretary General thanked Gen. Lori Robinson and Gen. Pierre St-Amand for their command’s unique work in ensuring the security of NATO’s two North American Allies.

Secretary General marks 69th anniversary of NATO, thanks Canada for its contributions

Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg marked the 69th anniversary of NATO’s founding with an official visit to Ottawa on Wednesday (4 April 2018). Speaking alongside Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Mr. Stoltenberg called the Alliance “a guarantor of peace, providing security and preventing conflict.” He welcomed Canada’s role as a founding member of NATO, and that Canada continues to make essential contributions to the transatlantic bond and to international security.

SPS - Still Pretty Smart @ 60: NATO’s Science for Peace and Security Programme celebrates its 60th Anniversary

Exactly 60 years ago, on 29 March 1958, the North Atlantic Council met in Paris where the then 15 NATO Ambassadors formally announced the establishment of a NATO Science Committee and the position of a Science Advisor to the Secretary General. Professor Norman F. Ramsey, a renowned US physicist from Harvard University who had once worked on the Manhattan Project, was appointed Science Advisor and chaired the first meeting of the NATO Science Committee, marking the foundation of the NATO Science Programme. Against the background of the launch of Sputnik1 by the Soviet Union, one of the Programme’s major goals was to promote the training of scientists within NATO countries to facilitate exchanges, build networks, and increase returns on research investments.
