22 July 2011, Rome - Admiral Giampaolo Di Paola, Chairman of NATO’s Military Committee had the privilege of speaking at the Change of Command Ceremony for the Commandant of the NATO Defence College (NDC).

After 3 years of excellence NATO must bid farewell to Lieutenant General Wolf Dieter Loeser and welcome his successor Lieutenant General Arne-Bård Dalhaug. Adm Di Paola presented LtGen Loeser with the NATO Meritorious Service Medal in honour of his achievements as Commandant of the NDC in further raising the quality of the NDC courses.

In his address to the NDC Graduating class, Adm Di Paola outlined NATO’s core tasks taken from the 2010 Lisbon Summit, and their relationships to NATO’s current operations in Libya and Afghanistan. He underlined the importance of learning from such current events and having an institution such as the NDC to teach NATO’s future senior officers and those of its partner countries, the dexterity to deal with these real-world challenges.

The NDC is the Alliance’s premiere academic institution directed by the Military Committee. Its mission is to contribute to the effectiveness and cohesion of the Alliance by developing its role as a major center of education, study and research on transatlantic security issues and fostering strategic level thinking on politico-military matters. The NDC was founded in 1951 by General Dwight D. Eisenhower.
