Alojz Šteiner, Chief of General Staff of the Slovenian Armed Forces

Major General Alojz Šteiner was born on June 22, 1957 in Gornja Radgona, Republic of Slovenia. From 1979 to 1990, he served on several S-3 duties in the Republic of Slovenia Territorial Defense Staffs. During the Independence War in 1991, he was both Chief of Staff and Deputy Commander in the Regional Territorial Defense Staff in Maribor. He also participated in and led com bat activities in this area. In December 1992, he was appointed Commander of the Regional Territorial Defense Staff in Maribor and remained in this position until July 1994. From August 1994 to April 1998, he worked in the General Staff of the Slovenian Armed Forces, first in the J-3 Department, then as Adviser to the Chief of General Staff and as Chief of Department for Reorganization of the Slovenian Armed Forces. In spring 1998, he was assigned to the 3rd Land Force Command in Celje, where he was Deputy Commander up to 2001. From October 2001 to February 2004, he was reassigned to the General Staff to the position of Chief of Force Planning Department, J-5, then Chief of Operations Department, J-3, and finally, Chief of Logistics Department, J-4. From June 2005 to February 2006, he was Deputy Commander of the Force Command of the Slovenian Armed Forces. From March to November 2006, he worked as Director of Staff in the General Staff and from December 2006 to April 2009 as Deputy Chief of General Staff. He was appointed Chief of General Staff of the Slovenian Armed Forces on 1 May 2009.

During his service in the Slovenian Armed Forces, Major General Alojz Šteiner took an active part in the most challenging transitional and transformational projects of the Slovenian Armed Forces. He was actively engaged in the transformation of the Slovenian Armed Forces to a professional force, organization of the Slovenian EU Council Presidency and implementation of the Defense System Strategic Review in 2009.

Major General Šteiner graduated from the University of Ljubljana and earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in the Faculty of Social Sciences - Defense Studies. In 1978, he finished the Reserve Officer School. Since 1983, he has taken part in different commander and staff officer courses at the battalion and brigade level. Between 1993 and 2000, he was an active lecturer in the Military Educational Centre of the Slovenian Armed Forces and an occasional guest lecturer at the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Ljubljana. In 2000, he finished the highest military school in Slovenia, the General Staff program at the Military Educational Centre. In June 2005, he graduated from the National Defense University, Washington D.C., USA, and earned his Master of Science at the Industrial College of the Armed Forces.

Major General Šteiner has received several decorations and medals, such as: Order of General Maister 2nd Degree, Order of General Maister with Swords 3rd Degree, Gold Medal of General Maister with Swords, Order of MSNZ 3rd Degree, Bronze, Silver and Gold Medals of the Slovenian Armed Forces, and Bronze Medal of General Maister. He was promoted to Brigadier in June 1998 and to Major General in December 2006.

He is married to Vlasta and has a son Saso.
