Azeri Minister at NATO Headquarters
Minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, Mr. Elmar Mammadyarov paid a visit to NATO HQ in Brussels on Wednesday 17 September 2008. Following a bilateral meeting with the Secretary General, Mr. Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, Minister Mammadyarov addressed the North Atlantic Council.
The main topics of discussion were implementation of Azerbaijan's Individual Partnership Action Plan (IPAP) and situation in the region. Minister expressed satisfaction with current level and quality of cooperation with NATO, including in such fields as stabilisation missions, civil emergency, science and public diplomacy.
Allied representatives thanked Azerbaijan for its significant contribution to the ISAF mission in Afghanistan and reconstruction efforts in that country.
Both sides stressed the importance of continued reforms in Azerbaijan.
Minister Mammadyarov shared his country's evaluation of the situation in the Caucasus, including in relation to recent events in Georgia. There was also exchange of views on energy security issues.
