Deputy Secretary General: Close cooperation will keep us safe
On Friday (15 October 2021), at the virtual To Be Secure (2BS) Forum organized by the Atlantic Council of Montenegro, NATO’s Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoană praised the valuable contributions that Montenegro is making to the Alliance as well as to greater security and stability in the Western Balkans region.
“Lasting peace and stability in this region require our continued collective effort”, Mr. Geoană said, “our policies in the region – including our Open Door policy – help strengthen stability and build greater cooperation in the Western Balkans”.
Reflecting on security challenges of today and tomorrow, the Deputy Secretary General stressed the importance of global partnerships and close cooperation with like-minded partners. “The closer we cooperate, the better the chance we have at protecting our democratic way-of-life against those that attempt to harm us”, he said.
NATO’s Brussels Summit decisions and 2030 agenda set an ambitious agenda to ensure that the Alliance is prepared to face these challenges, he added. Looking at the 2022 Madrid Summit, Allies range from strengthening the deterrence and defence posture, to enhancing national and collective resilience and investing more on innovative technologies.
