Brigadier Simon Mayall was commissioned into the 15th/19th The Kings Royal Hussars in 1979 after completing a degree in Modern History at Balliol College, Oxford. In between troop leading and an Adjutants appointment he was ADC to the Commander 1st British Corps. In 1985 he was posted on Loan Service to Oman and spent nearly 3 years commanding an armoured squadron in the Sultan of Oman's Armoured Regiment. He drifted into quieter waters at Staff College and the Ministry of Defence, before being lifted to go on Op GRANBY as the SO2 G3 Ops with HQ 1st UK Armoured Division. His involvement with the Middle East continued with the CHALLENGER 2 Sales Team.

With the 15th/19th Hussars Brigadier Mayall served in Germany and Cyprus before being, for a brief time second-in-command of the newly formed Light Dragoons. His SO1 appointment was as MA to the DSACEUR at HQ SHAPE, where he was heavily involved with the Outreach and Partnership for Peace programme in the Former Soviet Union. Before going to command 1st The Queen's Dragoon Guards in 1997, he completed a Defence Fellowship at St Antony's College Oxford, studying Turkish security policy, and set up HQ 1st Reconnaissance Brigade.

As Commanding Officer QDG he took the Regiment to BATUS and Northern Ireland before arms plotting the Regiment back to Catterick. His last appointment was Colonel Army Plans in the MOD, responsible for policy on size, shape and structure of the Army. He came to command of 1st Mechanized Brigade from the Higher Command and Staff Course.

Brigadier Mayall is a bachelor with a keen interest in politics, history and the theatre. He has travelled extensively in Africa, Central Asia and the Middle East. He is an enthusiastic sportsman, and an erratic shot.
