One ISAF soldier, three civilians killed in southern Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan – One Australian ISAF soldier and three civilians were killed early this morning during a fire fight in Tarin Kowt, Uruzgan province in southern Afghanistan.

A significant number of Taliban insurgents were killed or captured as part of the operation. Taliban insurgents initiated the fire fight which lasted several hours.

“Our thoughts are with the family, friends and colleagues of the soldier who lost his life in today's incident as well as with the families of the Afghans  killed,” said General Carlos Branco, the ISAF Spokesman. “At this time we simply do not know, how the civilians died. However, we do know that the insurgents fired upon ISAF soldiers from the compound in which the Afghan civilians (two women and one child) were found after the fight. ISAF makes all effort to prevent losses of innocent civilian lives.”

In exception of ISAF policy, ISAF confirms that our casualty is from Australia as the Australian authorities have already released that information.
