Secretary General’s end of year message to NATO-led forces deployed on operations
As we approach the holiday season and the end of 2009, I should like to express my sincere gratitude to all of you who are deployed on NATO-led missions and operations, and my immense admiration for your professionalism, courage and dedication.
NATO launches lecture series on new security challenges
Dr Jamie Shea, Director of Policy Planning in the Private Office of the Secretary General, and former NATO Spokesman, is giving a series of six lectures on security challenges such as climate change, energy security and cyber attacks. Each lecture tackles a specific challenge and looks at what NATO and the international community can do to meet that challenge successfully.
Statement by the NATO Secretary General on the passing away of Pierre Harmel
On behalf of NATO, I would like to express my condolences to the family of Mr. Pierre Harmel. Mr. Harmel's career in politics was long, distinguished and influential. He helped to shape politics in Belgium and at the European level, throughout his 31 years in public life.
NATO Secretary General commemorates 20 years since fall of the Wall in Berlin
On Monday, 9 November, Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen attended a ceremony in front of the Brandenburg Gate to commemorate the fall of the Berlin Wall twenty years ago.
NATO week in Armenia
The third NATO week in Armenia took place from 12-16 October, with the aim to provide a better understanding of the Armenia-NATO cooperation in the framework of the Individual Partnership Action Plan (IPAP).
“Staying secure”: NATO launches new lecture series

Sixty Years of the North Atlantic Council
The first formal meeting of the North Atlantic Council occurred on 17 September 1949. It was held in the auditorium of the United States Department of State in Washington, DC, the same room where the North Atlantic Treaty had been adopted on 4 April 1949.
Stamp exhibition looks at NATO's 60 years of history
A unique collection of stamps marking key moments in NATO’s history are on display today at NATO Headquarters. The Croatian Atlantic Council brought the exhibition to Brussels after touring Dubrovnik and Zagreb.
NATO photography contest website now open for submissions
South Eastern Europe is at the centre of a photo contest launched by NATO’s Public Diplomacy division this summer. This free competition is open to young people, aged 18 to 25, living in the region.
Danish Atlantic Youth Seminar explores security in the Caucasus
On 6 to 12 July 2009, some 36 students from 21 countries participated in a Danish Atlantic Youth Seminar in Aalborg, Denmark entitled, “Diplomacy and Crisis Management in the Backyard of Europe”. The Seminar focused on security concerns in the South Caucasus region.
Public diplomacy official delivers “Robin Beard Lecture” on NATO’s future
More than 200 graduate students from across the Euro-Atlantic area gathered at the Charles University in Prague on 13 July 2009 to discuss the future of the transatlantic partnership. Organised by the Greek Association for Atlantic and European Integration and the Fund for American Studies, the event allowed students to debate current transatlantic issues including NATO’s operation in Afghanistan, the impact of security challenges such as cyber attacks, energy security, terrorism, and the Alliance’s new Strategic Concept.
Young professionals discuss the future of the Black Sea region
Frozen conflicts in the Caucasus, energy security, European integration, and Euroatlantic relations with Russia were on the agenda of the 2nd annual International Black Sea Symposium. Organized by the International Centre for Black Sea Studies, the event took place on the Greek island of Kalymnos, Dodecanese, from 30 June to 5 July.
Top universities meet in Portugal to discuss NATO at 60
Some 200 political scientists and scholars of International Relations met in Estoril, Portugal, from 25 to 27 June to discuss key issues related to NATO’s future strategic direction.
Conference Examines NATO’s Capabilities
In light of the decision at the Strasbourg-Kehl Summit to develop a new Strategic Concept for the Alliance, the Center for Conflict Prevention and Early Warning and the National Defence College of Romania hosted an international conference entitled “NATO’s Capabilities: Budgeting for a Credible Defense in Europe” in Bucharest on 18 - 19 June.
Security conference focuses on NATO’s role for 21st century
As part of the activities marking the Alliance’s 60th anniversary, NATO’s Public Diplomacy Division sponsored an international security conference organized by the Ari Movement, a leading Turkish think-tank based in Istanbul.
NATO multimedia expo opens in Sofia
On 15 May, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria, Mr. Todor Churov, and the Head of the Corporate Communications Section of NATO's Public Diplomacy Division, Dr Gerlinde Niehus, opened the NATO multimedia exhibition “Securing Our Future” in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Slovak-Hungarian Youth Congress commemorates bilateral ties, NATO and EU membership
On 24-26 April, Slovak and Hungarian delegations of the Youth Atlantic Treaty Organization opened a new chapter in bilateral relations with the convening of a Congress on joint security issues.
NATO after 60 years
On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of NATO’s founding, Kent State University’s Lemnitzer Center for NATO and European Union Studies will be hosting a conference on April 30 and May 1 to examine the current and future challenges confronting the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
NATO Summit gets underway
Allied leaders of 28 nations have arrived at the Kurhaus in Baden-Baden. They were welcomed by the Secretary General of NATO, Mr. Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, the Chancellor of Germany, Mrs. Angela Merkel and the President of France, Mr. Nicolas Sarkozy and their spouses.
Youth Forum to discuss NATO’s future
On 2-3 April 2009, NATO’s Public Diplomacy Division will host a Youth Forum entitled, “NATO in 2020: What Lies Ahead?” on the margins of the NATO Summit in Strasbourg, France and Kehl, Germany.
NATO comes to the Washington Metro
Marking its 60th Anniversary Summit, NATO will spotlight Allied efforts in Afghanistan through a campaign in the capital where the North Atlantic Treaty was signed to found the organization. NATO will run a display campaign in the Washington, D.C., Metro system from Monday, March 23, through April 19, coinciding with the 60th Anniversary Summit jointly hosted by France and Germany in Strasbourg and Kehl.
Milan conference on NATO’s ongoing evolution
On 12 - 13 March 2009 in Milan, the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart organized a two day conference entitled “1949-2009: Sixty Years of the Atlantic Alliance between Continuity and Transformation”. The conference was sponsored by NATO’s Public Diplomacy Division, the Centre of High Defence Studies of the Italian General Staff and the Army Military Command in Lombardy.

through its archives
On 13 March 2009, the NATO Archives Committee will celebrate NATO’s 60th anniversary and the 10th anniversary of the Archives’ establishment with a commemorative event at NATO Headquarters in Brussels.

Building integrity in defence institutions
On 25 February, more than 170 representatives from 30 countries and 7 international organizations met in Monterey, California, for a two-day conference entitled "Building Integrity and Defence Institution Building”. The event was co-organised by NATO and the Naval Postgraduate School to commemorate both the Alliance’s 60th anniversary and the 100th anniversary of the Naval Postgraduate School.

Think-tanks to discuss future of NATO in Cracow
The Institute of Strategic Studies, in co-operation with NATO’s Public Diplomacy Division, will host a Forum on Euroatlantic Security entitled, “NATO before the Jubilee Summit – Does the Alliance Need a New Strategic Concept?” Discussions will be held on the margins of the next informal meeting of NATO Defence Ministers, to be held in the ancient city of Krakow, Poland on 19-20 February.

The fourth International Security Conference, or GLOBSEC, took place on 29 January in Bratislava, Slovakia. Organized by the Slovak Atlantic Commission, GLOBSEC is a platform for prominent international and Slovak political leaders, decision-makers, and independent experts to discuss key transatlantic and global security challenges.

“French soldiers in the heart of Afghanistan”
In cooperation with the French Army, NATO’s Public Diplomacy Division has put together a photography exhibition on French soldiers serving in Afghanistan. Entitled “French soldiers in the heart of Afghanistan”, the exhibition traces France’s involvement in the Afghan theatre since 2003.
