Kosovo

Good Morning, I have one point today.

My point pertains to the recent deployment of SFOR troops to Kosovo.

Last week, SFOR deployed US, UK and IT troops (approx - 350) swiftly and effectively. This demonstrates NATO's ability to move troops quickly within the Balkans. The SFOR troops were able to make a significant contribution to the restoration of order in Kosovo.

The rapid deployment of the Over The Horizon Forces is another indication of NATO's capability to respond to crisis situations and our commitment to peace and stability in the Balkan region.

Although it would be inappropriate to comment on the operational situation in Kosovo, clearly the security situation is improving - as indeed it must if Kosovo is not to squander the progress of recent years.

SFOR's priority remains the preservation of a safe and secure environment in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

We welcome the sensible appeals for calm made by key BiH leaders and recognise the lead role that the local police have taken in ensuring that the situation in Bosnia Herzegovina remains stable.

I will not speculate on when SFOR troops may return. They will stay as long as they are needed.

Thank you.
