The print section of the SFOR Psychological Branch (PSB)
is currently working hard on wrapping up one of the branch's
next products - a publication titled "Bosnia and Herzegovina
- a Country for a Good Life". The target audience of
the publication is the local population, although there will
be a limited number printed in English. The publication aims
to promote the cultural history and natural beauty of Bosnia
and Herzegovina (BiH) that help to make the country a truly
unique. For the purposes of this preview, we singled out those
parts of the publication that are related to the Sarajevo
area and it's surrounding.
BUTMIR'S CULTURE
Between 1893 and 1896, one of the richest Neolithic finds
in Europe was discovered in Butmir outside of Sarajevo. Thanks
to this important find, Neolithic culture from this age is
known amongst international archaeologists as Butmir's Culture.
HAGADA
One of the most valued international Hagadas - Jewish Sefardian
religious books of rituals - is the Sarajevan Hagada, written
in Spain in 1314. This book has been in the National Museum
in Sarajevo since 1894 and is amongst most valuable museum
exhibits in Europe.
GAZIHUSREV-BEG LIBRARY
Gazihusrev-Beg Library was established in 1537 in Sarajevo
and it was the biggest library in the Balkans at the time.
With its 50,000 books, handwritings and archives in the Arabic,
Turkish and Persian languages, this library is still considered
as being one of the most valuable collections of Oriental/Middle
Eastern languages in Europe.
