TALON keeps soldiers and families informed

 

Tuzla - Newspapers are a way of informing and entertaining soldiers. In SFOR there are a number of publications available for the troops. On June 10, members from the SFOR Informer met with colleagues from The Talon, a publication working out of Eagle Base located near Tuzla.

Welsh Guards and VRS

 

Manjaca - The sight and sounds of small arms weapons, television cameras, and tape recorders were seen and heard at Manjaca Range. First Battalion, Welsh Guards and Army of Republika Srpska (VRS) exchanged their weapons for the first time as part of a joint live-fire exercise conducted June 3.

IBG climbs together with the Federation Army

 

Dariva - On June 3, the Italian Battle Group (IBG) performed climbing and mountaineering exercises in Dariva (west Sarajevo). The training was carried out by the Reconnaissance Platoon (Alpieri) who taught the techniques to the men of the Federation Army.

Banja Luka and Novi Travnik - Joint Military Affairs in MND-SW contributes to the divisional task of a safe and secure environment as depicted in the General Framework Agreement for Peace (GFAP) by assisting, monitoring and guiding the Armed Forces in Bosnia and Herzegovina, to include their restructuring.

CIMIC Course shows opportunities and practices

 

Sarajevo/Trnovo - SFOR held a five-day CIMIC course in the first week of June in the Army Hall in Sarajevo. Fifty-two soldiers from nine countries and representatives from a non-governmental organisation were educated about CIMIC and the purpose of its mission.

MEDEVAC to Italy

 

Sarajevo - Last month the Italian Battle Group (IBG) carried out several medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) flights to Italy for the benefit of three local children. The co-ordination between the CIMIC (Civil-Military Co-operation) team of the IBG, and the Italian Embassy in Sarajevo made these trips possible.

World Cup alive and kicking at Butmir

 

At the start of the World Cup match there were 16 SFOR countries competing in the games. However, after the first part of the tournament, the number has dwindled to ten. The games that were played in the championship during the week before the publication of this issue were called Round of 16.

Ugljevik - The 1st Peacekeeping Russian Separate Airborne Brigade, as part of Multinational Division North operates within an Area of Operation in the North East of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It's here that a special working relationship has been established with the Americans, banishing the stereotypes of the Cold War into the past.

Canadians win Welsh Guard March and Shoot

 

Manjaca - The thirteen twelve-person teams from Multinational Division Southwest had to cover eight miles with 35 pounds of kit in two hours. The next step was to take on two miles as fast as possible while wearing 15 pounds of webbing, and carrying a rifle. At the end of the two miles they went straight to a shoot, firing at falling metal plates at a distance of 200 metres.

Slivo' and Haystacks

 

Zavrsje - Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) has many traditions, some of these, like distilling Slivovic - plum brandy - are imbedded in the culture. Others, such as the haystacks, can be seen throughout the countryside.

The MN MP Coy in Mostar

 

Mostar - The Multinational Military Police Coy in Mostar is a small unit few people know about in the theatre region. Belonging to Multinational Division Southeast, they work in the southern zone of the Area of Responsibility of the division where French and Spanish Battle Groups deploy their efforts.

State Border Service celebrates two years in BiH

 

The State Border Service was officially activated June 6, 2000 and is celebrating two years of state law enforcement, the first for Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH). From monitoring illegal immigration at state borders, to supervising the security of airports within BiH, the SBS have plenty to keep them busy.

Soldier in the spotlight

 

Private Ervi Maqellara is a twenty-year-old member of the Albanian contingent in Camp Carreau, Rajlovac. He was born in Tirana, the capital of the country. In Albania there is conscription of soldiers, but he decided to join the army as a Special Forces member. Because of this he has been in the military longer than the majority of other young people.
