Brigadier A P Farquhar MBE

Brigadier Andrew Farquhar was born in September 1953, educated at Pocklington School (near York) and Sheffield University, where he read Mechanical Engineering. He was commissioned into the Green Howards (Alexandra, Princess of Wales's Own Yorkshire Regiment) from the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst in December 1975.

Brigadier Farquhar commanded a rifle platoon for 18 months and in 1977, after a course at the School of Infantry, assumed the appointment of Mortar Officer. During this period he served in Germany, Great Britain, Northern Ireland, Malta and Norway. In 1978 he was posted for a two year tour in Northern Ireland. On completion of this tour in 1980 he became the Adjutant of the 1st Battalion. Whilst Adjutant, he served in the UK, Cyprus and Kenya. He was involved in the Prison Officers dispute of 1980 and flood relief operations in 1981. He was appointed to be a Member of the Most Honourable Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 1981. In 1984 he was posted to the Ministry of Defence as the SO3 (R&L) M04.

In 1985 he was sent to Division 1 of the Army Staff Course Part 1 at the Royal Military Academy of Science at Shrivenham. He subsequently attended the Army Staff Course Part 2 at Camberley and on completion was posted as the Military Assistant to the Assistant Chief of Defence Staff (Intelligence). In January 1989 he was posted to command C Company, 1st Battalion The Green Howards, part of 24 Airmobile Brigade. From October 1989 to March 1990 he commanded an independent re-inforced company group in the Falkland Islands. In December 1990 he was posted to the Joint Staffs at RAF High Wycombe for Operation Granby as the SO2 Current Operations (Land). His next posting was to the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst as a Chief Instructor in May 1991.

In June 1992 he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and was posted to be a member of the Directing Staff at the Royal Military College of Science. In June 1994 he assumed command of the 1st Battalion the Green Howards, During this command, the Battalion carried out an arms plot move from Catterick to Osnabruck in August 1994, completed a 6 months roulement tour in Northern Ireland at the East Tyrone Battalion from December 1994 to June 1995 and converted to the Armoured Infantry role, successfully completing a BATUS exercise (Medicine Man 3) in July 1996. In June 1996 he was awarded a Queen's Commendation for Valuable Service (QCVS). In August 1996 he was posted to be the Military Assistant to the Adjutant General. In September 1997 he was promoted to Colonel and appointed as the Chief of Staff at Headquarters Infantry and to be the Commandant of the Small Arms School Corps.

Brigadier Farquhar assumed command of 15 (North East) Brigade on 3 June 2000. Whilst he was in command, the Brigade played a leading role in Military Aid to the Civil Authorities (MAC(A)) operations: the fuel dispute, flood relief in the north east of England, the Foot and Mouth epidemic and the fire dispute. In September 2002 he was posted to be Commander Multi-National Division South West (now Multi-National Brigade North West) and Commander British Forces in Bosnia Herzegovina, a part of the NATO Stabilisation Force (SFOR).

Brigadier Farquhar is the Deputy Colonel of the Green Howards, the Vice President and Chairman of the Army Rifle Association and the Vice Commodore of Infantry Sailing.

Brigadier Farquhar is a keen offshore sailor (Yachtmaster) and has interests in shooting, running, carpentry and horology. He is married: his wife, Alison, is a doctor and they have three sons, Timothy (14), Iain and Douglas (twins aged 12) and a daughter Melissa (7).
