20-Sep-2006 Special 2004 NATO Summit Science Prize awarded to Turkish Institutes NATO Science Prize
A special Summit Science Prize was presented to three Turkish universities on the occasion of the NATO Summit in Istanbul, 28-29 June. The three institutes are - Bosphorus University, Istanbul Technical University, and the Middle East Technical University. The prize has been awarded for achievements in research on prevention of the consequences of earthquakes, and fostering cooperation between NATO and partner countries. The prize was presented by NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, at the Istanbul Military Museum on 27 June. NATO grants to research teams at the three institutions gave them the opportunity to undertake research on mitigating the consequences of strong motion earthquakes. The results have allowed relevant authorities to plan appropriate earthquake resistant facilities in the areas likely to be affected, and to reinforce buildings in high risk zones. The Turkish research teams were led by Professor Mustafa Erdik, at Bosphorus University, Professor Naci Görür at the Istanbul Technical University, Professor Güney Özcebe, at the Department of Civil Engineering, Middle East Technical University, and Professor Polat Gülkan at the University’s Disaster Management Research Center. |
