KFOR News Update
Pristina, 04 January 2000
by Lt.-Cdr. Philip Anido, KFOR Spokesperson

Illumination Rounds Light up the Eastern Boundary

For several hours last night, KFOR US troops shot artillery illumination rounds high into the night sky in the boundary area near Gnjilane. The powerful light gives KFOR patrols a clear view of any illegal activity which may be taking place on or near the line between Serbia and Kosovo.

Illumination rounds are released over a designated target area. People living in the vicinity will hear the bang as the guns fire and will also hear noise, similar to fireworks, as each round illuminates.

The action, which began at about 6 p.m. last night, is an important element in KFOR's security operations and demonstrates KFOR's resolve to control smuggling and crime, and to maintain a peaceful environment.
