ANSF, ISAF successes in Uzbeen Valley

KABUL, Afghanistan - Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) and International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) troops completed a highly successful joint operation in the Uzbeen Valley, Kabul province, on 4 June.

The operation involved ANSF troops, supported by ISAF, securing the Uzbeen Valley and clearing the area of insurgents.

Afghan commandos, French ISAF soldiers, and coalition aircraft were deployed to the valley, and immediately engaged groups of insurgents retreating to the north.

Afghan National Army personnel killed and wounded several insurgents in the ensuing fighting.

ISAF soldiers uncovered approximately 20 caches of weapons containing enough components for at least 40 Improvised Explosive Devices (IED). Other contraband included weapons, ammunition, explosives, 107mm and RPG rockets, mortar shells, mines, grenades, documents, and 4 kg of opium.

Another important aspect of the operation involved ANSF and ISAF troops improving the communication trails in the valley. The troops also delivered humanitarian aid to the local people, including medical care, clothing, and school stationery.

Finally, a shura was conducted with village leaders to explain the operation’s goals and successes. The shura was also used to inform the local people that future security force projects in the area will include the digging of wells.
