Czech-led PRT opens in Logar Province

An official opening ceremony of the first Czech-led Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) in Logar Province took place at Forward Operation Base (FOB) Shank on 19 March 2008.

The Czech delegation was headed by Lieutenant General Vlastimil Picek, Chief of Staff. Mr Abdullah Wardak, Governor of Logar Province and General David Rodriguez, Commander for Regional Command East also attended the ceremony.

The Czech deployment will consist of about 200 troops and up to 10 civilian experts, whose skills range from civil engineering to agriculture.

The Czechs will take over responsibility for a number of projects initiated by the US-led PRT Gardez, such as the girls school in the Chark district or a new provincial hospital in the Province’s capital of Pol-e-Alam.

"We are well aware that this commitment will not be easy but let me assure you that we are taking it very seriously. We are going to stay as long as we will be needed," said Martin Povejsil, Political Director of the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs. "We do not see ourselves as mentors but rather partners for the local administration," he added.

Governor Wardak expressed appreciation to the Czech people for their dedication to the province of Logar.
