Chairman of the Military Committee praises Georgia for its contribution to ISAF
Tbilisi, Georgia, 30 October. The Chairman of the NATO Military Committee (MC), Admiral Giampaolo Di Paola, concluded a two-day official visit to Georgia, on the invitation of Major General Devi Tchankotadze, Chief of Joint Staff of the Georgian Armed Forces (GAF).
During the visit, he met Mr. Bachana Akhalaia, Minister of Defence (MoD), Mr. Grigol Vashadze, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. David Bakradze, Chairman of the Parliament, Mr. Irakli Porchkidze, Deputy Head of the Security Council and Ms. Elene Khostaria, Deputy State Minister of Euro-Atlantic Integration. The discussions focused on Georgia’s contribution to the NATO led operation in Afghanistan (ISAF), NATO-Georgia current relations, future prospects of military-to-military cooperation and the ongoing reforms in the sphere of defense and security.
“I confirm that we will continue through the mechanism of Georgia-NATO Commission to work together for improving the interoperability and the defense reforms of the Georgian Armed Forces”, stated the Chairman of the Military Committee.
Admiral Di Paola also met with Joint Staff officers and MoD civil personnel. Themes of discussion at the roundtable meeting included NATO-Georgia partnership, future security challenges for the Alliance and military aspects of the new NATO Strategic Concept, which is expected to be approved in November at the NATO Summit of Heads of State and Government in Lisbon.
The NATO Delegation also paid a visit to the National Training Center “Krtsanisi”, where the Chairman addressed the soldiers serving in the Battalion attending the pre-deployment training for Afghanistan. “I want to thank Georgia for the significant and highly professional contribution its soldiers are providing the International Community in Afghanistan. I want to pay respect to those brave Georgian soldiers who lost their lives recently”.
The NATO Delegation also had the opportunity to visit the newly established NATO Liaison Office in Tiblisi and to meet Mr. Zbigniew Rybacki, the appointed Head of Office.
