Chairman of NATO’s Military Committee visited ISAF

General Kujat’s two days in Afghanistan followed a tightly packed schedule starting with a status brief on NATO’s latest mission, by Lieutenant General Rick Hillier, Commander ISAF.

He went on to meet UN Special Representative, Mr. Jean Arnault, who commented on the excellent synergy between the UN Assistance Mission (UNAMA) and ISAF and discussed, amongst other things, the importance of the upcoming elections in Afghanistan, after which he called on the Afghan Minister of Defence, Mr. Fahim Khan, H.E. Zalmay Khalilzad, US Ambassador to Afghanistan, and the National Security Advisor, Dr Rassoul.

His last meeting on the first day was with Lieutenant General David Barno, Commander, Coalition Forces Command Afghanistan, heading the American Operation Enduring Freedom where they discussed matters of common military interest.

On the second day, he visited the Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) at Konduz and was briefed by its Commander, Colonel Reinhard Kuhn, on the progress of the Demobilisation, Disarmament and Reintegration (DDR) process, and a possible way ahead for PRT expansion. He then had in-depth discussions with General Daoud, Commander of the Afghan 7th Corps, after which he met with the Governor of the Province of Konduz, Mr. Amir Latif. Mr. Latif congratulated NATO on the work undertaken by the Konduz PRT and it’s direct impact on the people of the province.

He had further discussions with NATO’s Senior Civilian Representative, Minister Hikmet Çetin, after which he called on the H.E. Mr. Komano, Japanese Ambassador to Afghanistan, Japan being the lead nation for the DDR process.”
