Forest Fires in Bosnia and Herzegovina

On 22 August 2013, the NATO Euro-Atlantic Disaster Response Coordination Centre (EADRCC) received a request for assistance from the Ministry of Security, Protection and Rescue Sector of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

High temperatures in Bosnia and Herzegovina caused great number of forest and wild-land fires. The fires started in Jablanica on 31 July 2013 and on Gacko on 19 August 2013. The situation remains serious since fires affect the Jadranica Hydro Power Plant, road infrastructures, industry and inhabited areas.

Since the terrain is unapproachable and partially contaminated with land mines and Unexploded Ordnance (UXO), the fires can be extinguished from the air only.

Bosnia and Herzegovina reported, on 27 August 2013, that local and national services were able to cope with the situation without using any international assistance.

On behalf of the Government of Bosnia and Herzegovina the EADRCC wishes to thank all Nations and other entities who provided and/or offered an assistance.
Further details are mentioned in the final report OPS(EADRCC)(2013)0105 from 28 Aug. 2013.
