Rome conference to set NATO vision for expeditionary operations
The requirements for mounting current and future military expeditionary operations will be the focus of a high-level meeting of NATO commanders, decision-makers and experts in Rome, Italy, 17-18 June.
The meeting is organized by NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Transformation and hosted at the NATO Defense College in Rome, the Alliance’s primary strategic level academic institution. The conference will take a long-term view, looking at the required capabilities through 2030.
It will draw upon the experiences of current and former NATO commanders, senior mentors, NATO staff, national representatives, think tanks as well as representatives of research and technology organizations.
The end goal is a common and agreed NATO vision of the requirements for expeditionary operations.
The transformation and modernization of military capabilities is revolutionizing expeditionary operations. To meet immediate and potential challenges, NATO works on a broad and multifaceted set of activities: from long-term, broad strategic thinking down to practical planning involving military and civilian structural adjustments, personnel issues, equipment procurement and the development of new technologies.
“The aim is to share a more precise understanding of the challenges faced by NATO and its member countries in executing expeditionary operations in the 21st century,” said Italian Navy Adm. Luciano Zappata, NATO’s Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Transformation.
