Workshop
on information strategies

A workshop for Estonian and Lithuanian information
specialists was organised at NATO HQ, 24-26 September.
The workshop explored different aspects of public
information, including information strategy and
crisis communication. It specifically focused on
current public opinion and perceptions of NATO in
these two aspirant countries, as well as ways of
fine-tuning their existing information strategies.

NATO
Defence Ministers focus on terrorism, the Balkans
and cooperation with Russia
|
|
|
The implications of the 11 September terrorist
attacks perpetrated against New York and Washington
D.C., NATO commitments in the Balkans and NATO-Russia
relations were at the centre of discussions of NATO
Defence Ministers, 26 September. This informal meeting,
which was originally planned over a two-day period
(26-27 September) in Naples, Italy, was attended
by Defence Ministers from all NATO member countries.
The United States were represented by Deputy Secretary
of Defense, Paul Wolfowitz, (left on photo)
who briefed his counterparts on the wide-ranging,
long-term approach the United States are adopting
to combat terrorism.

NATO's
second mission in the former Yugoslav Republic of
Macedonia (1)

|
The thirty-day mission, Operation Essential Harvest,
is coming to a successful end. It started on 27
August and finishes today, 26 September. It has
accomplished more than expected, collecting a greater
number of weapons and ammunitions than originally
anticipated. A day before the end of the mission,
the target of 3300 had already been surpassed.

NATO's

Task Force Amber Fox, the second NATO force to
be requested by President Trajkovski, is being put
into effect. It followed on from Operation Essential
Harvest on 27 September and will last for three
months, with the possibility of having its mandate
extended if necessary.

Defense College celebrates 50th anniversary
|
|
The NATO Defense College celebrated its 50th anniversary
end September. To mark the occasion, the College organised
a ceremony attended by a number of high-level NATO
officials, including NATO Secretary General Lord Robertson
and General Naumann, former Chairman of the NATO Military
Committee.

|
|
Prospects for the security inclusion of the Federal
Republic of Yugoslavia in the Partnership for Peace
and Euro-Atlantic community was the theme of the
first NATO-sponsored seminar held in Belgrade, 28-29
September.

Security
conference in Skopje
|
|
|
A high-level conference on "Macedonia on
the way to NATO" took place in the capital
of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (1)
from 28 to 30 September. Speakers included the Minister
of Defence Vlado Buchkovski, the Spokesman of the
OSCE Mission in Skopje Harald Schenker and NATO
officials. They discussed different aspects of the
country's security concerns, including the impact
of the current situation on stability in the Balkans
as a whole, the role of regional security organisations
in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (1),
in particular that of NATO, and the country's possible
integration into European institutions.
