Uzbekistan celebrates
its 10th anniversary of independence
On the occasion of the Republic of Uzbekistan's 10th anniversary of independence,
1 September, Lord Robertson sent a letter of congratulations to President
Islam Karimov. The Secretary General also met with the newly appointed
Ambassador to NATO, H.E. Alisher Shaykhov on 5 September.
Uzbekistan, situated in Central Asia, has been a NATO partner since 21
December 1991. It is a member of the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council
and the Partnership for Peace programme, and participates in joint exercises,
as well as other cooperative activities organised by the Alliance.
