Europe and the US: how strong is the bond?

In the shadow of the US' pivot to Asia, Europe clearly needed to step up its own role in international security. And it has, argues Tomáš Valášek . European efforts in Libya and Mali have already been appreciated in Washington and strengthened the Transatlantic bond.

Europe and the US:

How strong is the bond?

It remains strong

and it’s not just a cliché,

we still rely on each other

to provide security

and back up to get each

other’s backs, to speak colloquial.

We have stepped up.

We have done our share

and it hasn’t gone

unappreciated in Washington.

Conversations with my Washington

friends and colleagues

suggest that there's

a greater appreciation

for the way Europe

has responded to the calls

for more European leadership.

The reality is when you look

at the past few conflicts,

whether it is Libya or Mali,

countries have stepped up.

They have done things

that may have been thought

unthinkable ten or fifteen years ago,

conducting reasonably

large military operations

with important US support,

indispensable US support,

but with European countries in a lead.

Two countries,

France and Britain in Libya,

French leadership in Mali.

We have stepped up.
