AFSOUTH covers an area of some four million square kilometres including Greece, Hungary, Italy, Spain and Turkey. It also includes the Black Sea, the Sea of Azov, the whole of the Mediterranean and the Atlantic Approaches to the Strait of Gibraltar east of longitude 7º 23' 48" W, and an area around the Canary Islands and its associated airspace. The region is physically separated from the AFNORTH region by non-NATO countries (Switzerland and Austria). The Commander of AFSOUTH is a United States four-star Flag or General Officer. His subordinate commands are composed of:

  • Two Component Commands:
    • Allied Air Forces South in Naples, Italy;
    • Allied Naval Forces South in Naples, Italy.

  • Four Joint Sub-Regional Commands:
    • Joint Command South in Verona, Italy;
    • Joint Command Southcentre in Larissa, Greece;
    • Joint Command Southeast in Izmir, Turkey;
    • Joint Command Southwest in Madrid, Spain.
