Lieutenant General Ergin Saygun

2003 - 2005

Lieutenant General Ergin SAYGUN was born in 1946, in Istanbul. He graduated from the Turkish Military Academy in 1966 as a Second Lieutenant and completed his basic artillery training in The Artillery Scholl in 1967.

Following his graduation from the Artillery School, he served as the Assistant Military Attaché, and Liaison Officer to United Nations Command in Korea.

In 1971, he attended the basic flight training and was appointed to the 3rd Army Aviation Regiment (1st Lt.) between 1972 and 1974. Between 1974 and 1976, he worked as a flight instructor in The Army Aviation School.

He attended the Army Staff College (Capt.) between 1976 and 1978. Following his graduation, he served as a staff officer in Strategy and Force Planning Department of the Turkish General Staff Headquarters between 1978 and 1979.

In 1979 and 1980 he attended the Royal Army Staff Collage, Camberly, UK, and following his graduation, he assumed responsibility in the Army Staff College as a directing staff. After his promotion he was appointed to the Turkish Military Representation at NATO in Brussels as a staff officer between 1982 and 1985, and served as military assistant to Chief of Turkish General Staff TU (Lt.Col.) between 1985 and 1987 respectively. He served as Battalion Commander in the years of 1987 and 1989, and he was the Chief of G-3 Ops, Pl.Br. of the 1st Army Headquarters in Istanbul, between 1989 and 1991.

Between 1991 and 1992, he was appointed as the Secretary of the General Staff of the Turkish Land Forces and then assigned as the Regiment Commander to 50KTKA in 1992. He served as the Logistic and Mobility Branch Chief (B.Gen.) at SHAPE on 1993 and 1995. From 1995 to 1997, he commanded the 14th Mechanized Brigade at Kars.

In 1997, he was promoted to Major General and was assigned as the Head of Strategy Department in the J-5 Division of TGS. After completing his assignment at the General Staff HQ, he was assigned as the Deputy Commander of 4th Corps and Commander of 1st Mechanized Infantry Division in Ankara in 2000. He was promoted to Lieutenant General and appointed as 3rd (TU) Corps Commander in 2001.On 4th of August 2003 he was assigned as the Military Representative of Turkey to NATO.

He was awarded with the Outstanding Service and Operations Medals (two stars); Foreign Service, Marksmanship, Staff Duties and Distinguished Unit Ribbons.

Lieutenant General Ergin SAYGUN is married to Mrs. Nermin SAYGUN and has two children.
