Eivind Hauger-Johannessen

Vice Admiral Eivind Hauger-Johannessen was born 11 December 1946 in Oslo.

He graduated from the Royal Norwegian Naval Academy in 1969 and received a M.Sc. degree with distinction in Naval Architecture from University College London in 1978. Hauger-Johannessen completed the Norwegian Naval Staff College in 1982 and was a member of the Royal College of Defence Studies in the Great Britain 1991.

Hauger-Johannessen started his military career as a Lieutenant and chief engineer in fast patrol boat squadrons. Following this he served as staff officer at the Royal Norwegian Navy Materiel Command. He served there until 1981, only interrupted by Post Graduate education in Great Britain. Hauger-Johannessen was promoted Lieutenant Commander in 1974 and Commander in 1980.

In 1982 he was assigned to Headquarters Defence Command Norway. He first served as staff officer within the Plans Section of the Organisation Branch in the Navy Staff. He was promoted to Commander Senior Grade in 1984 and headed the Planning Section of the same branch and staff until 1986.

Hauger-Johannessen left the Navy in 1986 for two years becoming head of the Oil and Gas Division of Norsk Elektrisk & Brown Boveri, a major electrical engineering company in Norway.

He returned to the Navy in 1988 and was promoted to Captain and became Chief of the Organisation Branch in the Navy Staff. He had this assignment until 1991.

Following his term at the Royal College of Defence Studies, Hauger-Johannessen became Commandant of the Royal Norwegian Navy Staff College. He was promoted to Commodore in 1993 and assigned Chief of Staff in the Operations and Plans Division of Headquarters Defence Command Norway. Hauger-Johannessen served as Senior Aid to HM King Harald 5 from 1992 to 1995. From 1995 he became Chief of Staff of the Operations Division in Headquarters Defence Command Norway. In 1997 he was promoted to Rear Admiral and assigned as Commander of the Royal Norwegian Navy Materiel Command. In 1998 he was promoted to Vice Admiral and appointed Chief of Staff of the Headquarters Defence Command Norway and Deputy Chief of Defence.

Vice Admiral Hauger-Johannessen is married to Bente (former Bratsberg), and they have two sons Petter (born 1968) and Erik (born 1971).
