Admiral Guido Venturoni

Admiral Guido Venturoni was born in Teramo on April 10th, 1934.

He entered the Naval Academy in 1952 and after graduating as an Ensign in July 1956, he initially served at sea as Navigator and Communications Officer. He subsequently underwent United States Navy flight training obtaining his Naval Aviator Wings and Carrier qualification. Back in Italy, from 1959 to 1965. He flew maritime patrol aircraft, later becoming an ASW tactical instructor.

He additional qualified as a helicopter pilot in 1966 and after promotion to Lieutenant Commander, as given command of the 2nd helicopter Squadron, on completion becoming the Fleet Staff Officer responsible for Air Operations.

His earlier sea commands were the Corvettes "Danaide", "Albatros" and "Urania" and the frigate "Fasan". Later, as a Captain, he commanded the cruiser "Caio Duilio".

His more significant appointments within the Central Staffs were Head of the Naval Helicopter Studies and Projects Office; Executive Assistant to the Chief of Navy Staff and subsequently the same post with the Chief of Defence within the Naval Personnel Directorate he was responsible for employment and career planning of all active duty Officers.

Selected to flag rank in 1982, he served as the Head of Plans and Operation Department on the Naval General Staff and thereafter held the corresponding post within the Defence General Staff until September 1986. His other appointments as a flag Officer have been Commander First Naval Division, one of the two Italian sea control Task Group (1986-87). Head of the Financial Planning Bureau on the Naval General Staff (1987-1989) and, finally Deputy Chief of the Navy Staff. Promoted Vice Admiral on January 1st, 1990. From February 1991 to February 1992 he was Commander in Chief of the Fleet and NATO Commander of the Central Mediterranean.

In the rank of Admiral, from 15 February 1992 to 31 December 1993 Chief of Staff of the Italian Navy.

January 1st, 1994 he was appointed Chief of Italian Defence General Staff.

Admiral VENTURONI holds the following decorations and awards Knight of the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, Mauritian Medal for Merit, silver Medal for sea-duty service, gold Medal for air service, Officer of the "order of Legion d' Honneur" of the French Republic, Gran Cross of the "Orden de Mayo al Mrito Naval of the Argentina Republic", 1st class Cross of the Order of "Mrito Naval" of the Spanish Kingdom, 2nd cass Decoration of the Order of "Merito Naval" of the Venezuela Republic.

Admiral VENTURONI is married to Giuliana Marinozzi and he has two sons Paolo and Roberto, one daughter Isabella, and two grand children.
