Генеральний секретар здійснив свій перший, після призначення на посаду, офіційний візит до Лондона. Під час його зустрічі з прем’єр-міністром Гордоном Брауном головною темою для обговорення був Афганістан. Співрозмовники погодилися з тим, що надалі місія має бути зосереджена на прискоренні передачі відповідальності афганцям, а також з тим, що, якщо умови дозволять це зробити, це може розпочатися вже наступного року і в рамках НАТО.
Генеральний секретар також зустрівся з міністром закордонних справ Міллібендом і знову обговорив питання Афганістану. Вони також обговорили майбутнє засідання міністрів оборони, що відбудеться на початку грудня, як важливу можливість провести політичні консультації щодо місії і погодилися з тим, що афганська влада повинна продемонструвати конкретні досягнення у боротьбі з корупцією і поліпшення врядування.
