Я потрясен неизбирательным применением насилия против мирных демонстрантов в Ливии. Я сожалею о гибели людей. Я призываю ливийские власти прекратить репрессии против невооруженных граждан.
Народ Ливии, как и многие другие народы в регионе Ближнего Востока, выразил сильное стремление к демократическим переменам. Их законные стремления должны быть рассмотрены. Свобода самовыражения и свобода собраний являются основными правами, в которых народу не может быть отказано.
Как генеральный секретарь союза демократических государств, я твердо убежден, что только демократия является единственной надежной основой долгосрочной стабильности. В конечном итоге никакое общество не может пренебрегать волей народа, потому что стремление к свободе живет в каждом человеке.
