Hommage du secrétaire général de l’OTAN aux forces australiennes

Le secrétaire général de l’OTAN, M. Anders Fogh Rasmussen, a rendu personnellement hommage aux forces de défense australiennes le jeudi 14 juin, en les remerciant de la contribution apportée à la mission de l'Alliance en Afghanistan.

Le secrétaire général a rencontré dans la capitale australienne, Canberra, les membres des forces armées récemment rentrés d'Afghanistan. L'Australie compte actuellement 1 550 soldats stationnés en Afghanistan, ce qui en fait le plus gros contributeur non OTAN à la mission de la FIAS.

« Depuis les tout premiers jours de la campagne internationale conduite en Afghanistan, l'Australie apporte une contribution importante et consent de grands sacrifices en faveur de l'action que nous menons ensemble pour empêcher le pays de redevenir un jour un sanctuaire pour les terroristes », a déclaré le secrétaire général aux soldats des forces de défense australiennes. « Je veux dire à chacun et chacune d'entre vous que vous faites un travail formidable, avec beaucoup de courage, de compétence et de détermination. Au nom de l'OTAN et de nos partenaires de la FIAS, je vous remercie tous. »

Le secrétaire général a loué le soutien indéfectible fourni par le pays à la mission de la FIAS et a ajouté que l'Alliance était particulièrement reconnaissante à l'Australie d'avoir récemment annoncé qu'elle dirigerait l'action de la FIAS dans la province d'Uruzgan avant la fin de l'année. Il a aussi remercié l'Australie pour la décision de son gouvernement de maintenir son engagement envers la mission de l'OTAN en Afghanistan après 2014, lorsque le rôle principal de l'Alliance ne sera plus axé sur le combat mais sur la formation, le conseil et le mentorat au bénéfice des forces de sécurité nationales afghanes.

« Grâce à vous, nous observons à présent d'énormes progrès en Afghanistan », a déclaré M. Fogh Rasmussen. « Le transfert de la responsabilité de la sécurité aux forces de sécurité nationales afghanes progresse de façon régulière, et nous mènerons à bien notre mission de combat d'ici à la fin de 2014. »

Juste avant de rencontrer les soldats, le secrétaire général a déposé une couronne de fleurs sur la tombe du soldat australien inconnu, au mémorial de guerre australien, en l'honneur de ceux et celles qui ont perdu la vie pendant leur mission en Afghanistan ou ailleurs.

Cet hommage précédait des entretiens, dans la journée de jeudi, avec Mme Julia Gillard, premier ministre d'Australie, M. Stephen Smith, ministre de la Défense, et d'autres hauts responsables australiens à Canberra. Le secrétaire général se rendra également à Sydney.
