NATO-ISAF supports education in Afghanistan

NATO’s Provincial Reconstruction Teams continue to provide support to the education sector in Afghanistan.

On 6 November, the Lithuanian-led Team in Chaghcharan, Ghowr Province, assisted with the setting up of the only kindergarten in the area.

Six million children in school

In Paktya Province, NATO-ISAF is sponsoring the refurbishment of four schools and providing vital school supplies.

On 4 November, a ceremony was held to celebrate the completion of a new roof for a school in Herat City.  The reconstruction work was carried out by a local contractor in the framework of the efforts of the Italian-led Herat Provincial Reconstruction Team.

Today, over six million Afghan children are in school, a sixfold increase over 2001.  37% are girls and one-third of teachers are women.
