NATO Deputy Secretary General visits California

NATO Deputy Secretary General Rose Gottemoeller arrived in Los Angeles late on Wednesday (26 April 2017), for a five day visit to California that will include meetings at the RAND Corporation, Google, Palantir, and Stanford University.

In her first official visit to the United States since becoming Deputy Secretary General,  Gottemoeller will discuss the global security outlook, counter-terrorism and challenges on NATO’s southern borders with Dr Michael Rich, President of the RAND Cooperation and other senior RAND executives on Thursday (27 April 2017).  Later that day,  Gottemoeller will give a key note speech at San Diego University, addressing students, faculty and guests on the important role of women in promoting peace and security.

 On Friday (28 April 2017) the Deputy Secretary General will visit Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory for talks with Dr William Goldstein, the Director of the facility, Dr Brad Roberts, and other scientists and experts about nuclear deterrence and posture policy.  On Friday afternoon, Gottemoeller is set to take part in a roundtable discussion at Stanford University on modern defence and deterrence issues. The talks will be open to students, fellows and faculty and will be hosted by former US Secretary of Defence Bill Perry and former US Secretary of State George Schultz.  

On Saturday, Gottemoeller will meet with Dr Gloria Duffy, President of the Commonwealth Club, to plan future cooperation between the Club and NATO.

Wrapping up the visit, Gottemoeller will visit the headquarters of Google and Palantir on Monday (1 May 2017). She will have talks with industry leaders on topics such as cyber security, private and public sector partnerships and the growing threat of cyber-attacks.
