Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg welcomed Montenegro’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Igor Lukšić and Justice Minister Zoran Pažin to NATO headquarters on Tuesday (7 July 2015) to discuss Montenegro’s progress and remaining challenges on its Euro-Atlantic path.
Today’s meeting of the North Atlantic Council, attended by Deputy Prime Minister Lukšić and Minister Pažin, was part of the intensified and focused talks that NATO is conducting with Montenegro in order to assess, by the end of the year, whether the country is ready to join the Alliance.
During the meeting, the Secretary General and Allied ambassadors commended Montenegro’s considerable reform efforts and encouraged the country to continue on this path. They also welcomed Montenegro’s commitment to regional security and cooperation. The Secretary General underscored that Montenegro has repeatedly demonstrated that it shares NATO’s values, and thanked Montenegro for its continued contributions to NATO’s Resolute Support mission in Afghanistan.
