Moldova’s Foreign Minister and the Acting Defence Minister visited NATO HQ on 4 July to exchange views on regional security and discuss Moldova's progress in implementing its Individual Partnership Action Plan with NATO.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Andrei Stratan and Acting Minister of Defence General Ion Coropcean held a bilateral meeting with NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, and then addressed a session of the North Atlantic Council.

Istanbul precondition

A wide range of issues were covered in the meetings, including Moldova's ongoing democratic and defence reform process, the evolving regional security situation, and the Government of Moldova's efforts in support of peaceful conflict resolution in the Transnistria region of Moldova.

The Ministers reiterated their position that the implementation of the 1999 OSCE Istanbul Commitments remained a precondition for the ratification of the Adapted Conventional Forces in Europe (CFE) Treaty.

NATO Allies once again reaffirmed their strong support for the territorial integrity of Moldova, as well as support for the fulfillment of the Istanbul commitments.
