NATO Secretary General discusses closer cooperation with EU Defence Ministers

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg is meeting with EU Defence Ministers on Friday (5 February 2016) to discuss shared security challenges and stronger cooperation between the European Union and NATO. He stressed the importance of working more closely to address hybrid threats and violent instability in the South.

New NATO units in Eastern Europe gear up to support exercises and military planning

The Alliance’s six new small headquarters in Eastern Europe – the NATO Force Integration Units (NFIUs) –are off to a busy start. Inaugurated six months ago in Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Romania, the units have since participated in major military exercises and welcomed new staff. They are on track to become fully operational by the Warsaw Summit in July 2016.

Chairman of NATO Military Committee visits Tunisia

General Petr Pavel stressed NATO’s commitment to Tunisia and welcomed the opportunity to discuss further practical military cooperation during his visit two-day visit to Tunis (27-28 January 2016). After meeting with Brigadier General Ismail Fathalli, Chief of Staff of the Tunisian Armed Forces and the Tunisian Minister of National Defence, Mr. Farhat Horchani, the Chairman commended Tunisia on its efforts to increase interoperability with NATO and its active participation in the Mediterranean Dialogue.

NATO Military Committee Chairman calls for stronger ties between NATO and its Mediterranean partners

During his visit to the Kingdom of Morocco (29 - 30 January, 2016), General Petr Pavel held bilateral talks in Rabat with Mr. Abdellatif Loudiyi, Minister Delegate to the Head of Government for the Administration of National Defence, General Bouchaid Arroub, Chief of Defence and the Chiefs of Staff of the Land, Naval and Air Forces.

Secretary General’s Annual Report shows cuts in defence spending have almost stopped

The year 2015 showed how insecurity abroad directly affects our security at home, but it also showed that the Alliance is responding, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said during the presentation of his Annual Report today (28 January, 2016). Mr. Stoltenberg welcomed Allies’ progress on defence spending, noting that “after many years of substantial reductions in defence spending, the cuts have now practically stopped among European Allies and Canada. And in 2015, defence cuts were close to zero.” He emphasised that more needs to be done to increase defence investments in the face of major security challenges.

Defence Expenditures of NATO Countries (2008-2015)

NATO collects defence expenditures from Allies on a regular basis and presents aggregates and subsets of this information. Each Allied countries’ Ministry of Defence reports current and estimated future defence expenditure according to an agreed definition of defence expenditure, and represent payments actually made, or to be made, during the course of the fiscal year. NATO also makes use of up-to-date economic and demographic information available from the Directorate-General for Economic and Financial Affairs of the European Commission, and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. In view of the differences between this definition and national definitions, the figures shown may diverge considerably from those which are quoted by national authorities or given in national budgets. Research and development expenditures related to major equipment are included in equipment expenditures and pensions paid to retirees in personnel expenditures.
