NATO Deputy Secretary General underscores importance of Asia-Pacific partnerships

Deputy Secretary General Rose Gottemoeller stressed the importance of NATO’s partners in the Asia-Pacific region at the seventh NATO Asia-Pacific Dialogue in Brussels on Monday (16 October 2017). The Dialogue is organized annually by NATO’s Public Diplomacy Division in cooperation with the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (Foundation), and was hosted by the Atlantic Treaty Association.

The NATO Office of Security (NOS) hosted a Security Workshop from 25 to 29 September 2017 in Brdo pri Kranju, Slovenia. Representatives came from 14 partner countries, four international organisations and the National Security Authority of Slovenia, which assisted in organising the event.

NATO Deputy Secretary General discusses women’s rights with Afghan First Lady

NATO Deputy Secretary General Rose Gottemoeller met with the First Lady of Afghanistan, Rula Ghani in Brussels on Wednesday (11 October 2017) for talks on challenges facing Afghan women, and how to advance their rights. Ms Gottemoeller thanked Mrs Ghani for her leadership on women’s issues, including by promoting changes to give women a greater role in the Afghan security forces.

Civil Society Advisory Panel on Women, Peace and Security holds second annual meeting

The second annual meeting of the Civil Society Advisory Panel (CSAP) took place from 1 to 3 October 2017 in Brussels. Discussions focused on increasing understanding of NATO’s achievements and challenges in implementing its United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1325 Policy and Action Plan and contributions to its upcoming revision. The Panel also reviewed more effective governance and working mechanisms for the CSAP and identified priorities for the year ahead.

Ukraine and Afghanistan win their first-ever medals at the Invictus Games

Athletes from Team Ukraine returned home with 14 medals, despite participating in the Invictus Games for the first time. Vadym Sviridenko, a Ukrainian army medic who lost his hands and feet two years ago, was one of them. He won a bronze medal for the four-minute indoor rowing competition. “It’s what we have been moving towards and working on all year,” he said.

NATO and MD partners meet in Mauritania for the Fifth Mediterranean Dialogue Policy Advisory Group (MD PAG)

On 2-3 October 2017, the fifth meeting of the NATO Mediterranean Dialogue-Policy Advisory Group (MD PAG) took place in Nouakchott, Mauritania. The event opened with welcoming remarks by Ambassador Alejandro Alvargonzález, NATO Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs and Security Policy and an opening address by Ms. Khadijetou M'Bareck Fall, Minister Delegate for Africa and Maghreb of Mauritania. Representatives of NATO Allies and Mediterranean Dialogue partners participated in the meeting. In addition, high-level representatives from Libya, the European Union Delegation in Mauritania, the G5 Sahel, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and the German Marshall Fund (GMF) took part in the meeting as speakers.
