The North Atlantic Council approved the nomination of General Philip M. Breedlove, United States Air Force, to the post of Supreme Allied Commander Europe.

Russian Chief of Defence visits NATO’s Operational Command

General Nikolai Makarov, the Russian Chief of General Staff, visited Allied Command Operations at the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) in Mons, Belgium, on 17 January. He met the Supreme Allied Commander Europe, received operational briefings and toured SHAPE facilities, including the bunker housing the command of NATO forces in Europe.

2009 NATO Legal Conference in Strasbourg, France

The OPP experiment: a handshake across the ocean

Geographical separation often makes relations between NATO commands difficult. Having to deal with common subjects by telephone, e-mail or video teleconference can lead to different understandings of the same problem, or even to clear misunderstandings. This challenge was overcome during an event co-hosted by Allied Command Operations (ACO) and Allied Command Transformation (ACT): the Operations Planning Process (OPP) experiment.

AWACS to provide airspace security for NATO Summit

At the request of German national authorities, E-3A AWACS aircraft from the NATO Airborne Early Warning and Control Force will provide airspace security and surveillance support during the upcoming NATO Heads of State and Government Summit on the 3rd and 4th of April in Strasbourg, France and Baden-Baden and Kehl, Germany.

SHAPE Christmas ceremony

An unbroken tradition since 1967, the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony of the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), took place on 3 December 2001. It serves as an important opportunity for the SHAPE community to express its sincere gratitude to the people of Malmedy, in the Ardennes, for their generous gift of fir trees each year. The ceremony was co-presided by the Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), General Joseph W. Ralston, and Mr. Robert Denis, member of the House of Representatives and Mayor of Malmedy.
