For two days the Polish capital has become a hub of discussion on NATO’s new Strategic Concept – a document that, once agreed by all Allies, will shape the organisation’s future direction. The Secretary General of NATO, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, began his first official visit to Poland on 12 March by taking part in the international conference “NATO’s New Strategic Concept – Global, Transatlantic and Regional Challenges and Tasks”.

NATO counter-piracy mission changes command

A NATO maritime task force handed over the command of the counter-piracy Operation Ocean Shield to the new task force of NATO ships from the Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 (SNMG2) on Friday, 12 March. The ships currently come from the UK (flagship), Greece, Italy, Turkey and USA. NATO warships have been conducting counter piracy patrols off the Horn of Africa, a strategically important area, since October 2008.

Clearing cold war remnants in Azerbaijan

Grazing sheep near Saloglu, in the north-eastern corner of Azerbaijan, used to be a dangerous task. In an area of more than five square kilometres, hundreds of thousands of pieces of explosive material lay hidden from view at various depths below the rolling, shrub-covered land. Now thanks to a NATO Trust Fund project, a large part of the area has been cleared, and one day soon, the entire former military base will be safe for the local population. More...
