Helping Georgia clear mines and unexploded ordnance

On 20th February 2013 a closing ceremony to mark the end of the Georgia III NATO Trust Fund/Partnership for Peace Project was held at NATO HQ. The event was hosted by the Georgian Minister of Defence, Mr. Irakli Alasania with 21 Ambassadors amongst the 60 guests. The project helped to clear mines and unexploded ordnance in Georgia and to improve medical rehabilitation for victims injured by explosions.

Building capacity to clear unexploded ordnance in Georgia

Following the 2008 war between Georgia and Russia, Georgia faced the task of rebuilding affected areas of the country. On top of the reconstruction efforts, Georgia faced an additional problem: legacy minefields and extensive unexploded ordnance contamination. In response to this, Georgia turned to NATO for help. At the government’s request, NATO designed and funded a project focused on strengthening the Georgian Army’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Company.

NATO Ministers agree to boost cooperation with Russia, Georgia, back Turkish request for air defence

NATO Foreign Ministers wrapped-up two days of meetings on Wednesday (5 December) with agreements to augment Turkey’s air defence capabilities, boost cooperation with Russia and develop a funding mechanism for Afghan Security Forces. Discussions also centered on NATO’s cooperation with Georgia, nations in the Western Balkans and global partners.

NATO Foreign Ministers praise Georgia’s commitment to Euro-Atlantic integration

NATO Foreign Ministers welcomed in Brussels the new Georgian Foreign Minister Maia Panjikidzé and looked forward to more cooperation in the context of the NATO-Georgia Commission (NGC). During the meeting, Allies encouraged all parties in Georgia to keep up the momentum of the recent elections and to consolidate democratic progress.

The NATO Secretary General called President Mikheil Saakashvili and Mr. Bidzina Ivanishvili on 12 October and congratulated both leaders, together with the Georgian people, for completing free, competitive and peaceful parliamentary elections on 1 October.

NATO’s partners in the South Caucasus

On 6 and 7 September NATO’s Secretary General visited the South Caucasus – a region that is strategically important to the Alliance. NATO has been progressively deepening dialogue and cooperation with Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia since the early 1990s. All three partners provide valuable support to NATO-led operations, while benefiting from NATO support for security and defence-related capacity building and reform.

NATO Secretary General praises Georgia's progress toward NATO in visit to Tbilisi

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen praised Georgia for its strong commitment to NATO and to democratic reforms during a visit to the country on Thursday. The Secretary General said Georgia’s reforms are bringing the country closer to NATO. “Georgia is a special partner for NATO and a model of commitment,” he said after talks with President Mikheil Saakashvili in Tbilisi. The Secretary General also addressed the Annual Session of the Georgian Ambassadors.
