NATO and Finland discuss further strengthening of partnership

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen on a visit to Helsinki on Thursday (15 November) called for a deepening of the Alliance’s partnership with Finland.

Finland: a valued Nordic partner

Finland is among NATO’s most active, committed and effective partners. The country currently contributes to the NATO-led operations in Kosovo and Afghanistan, and has also indicated its willingness to participate in the post-2014 follow-on mission to train, advise and assist the Afghan forces. Beyond operations and missions, Finland actively participates in NATO exercises and a number of projects aimed at developing military capabilities and training. The NATO Secretary General visited the capital Helsinki on 14 and 15 November to discuss how to further strengthen cooperation.

Fighter jets secure airspace of the Baltic countries

08:58, 28 March 2012 – the claxon shrieks at Tampere Air Base in Finland. Four minutes later, two F-18 Hornet fighter jets from the Finnish Air Force take off. Their mission – to intercept an aircraft that is not complying with international air traffic regulations. Since the attacks of 11 September 2001, the surveillance of European airspace is a sensitive topic for the Alliance member States and their partners.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Finland, Mr. Erkki Tuomija, visited NATO Headquarters on Monday 23 January 2012. He met with the NATO Secretary General, Mr. Anders Fogh Rasmussen.
