Secretary General's 60th anniversary gifts to Germany

On 30 June 2015, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg traveled to Berlin to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Germany’s accession to the North Atlantic Treaty. During his official speech, Secretary General Stoltenberg presented German Minister of Foreign Affairs Frank-Walter Steinmeier with two extraordinary gifts in honor of the occasion. Both gifts were specially produced by the NATO Archives in collaboration with the NATO Printing and Graphics Design Section.

60th Anniversary of the Accession of Germany to NATO

On 3 June 2015, the NATO Archives celebrated the 60th anniversary of Germany’s accession to the North Atlantic Treaty with an exhibition at NATO HQ that showcased a unique collection of archival documents, photos and film footage related to the historic event. All of this material, most of which has never been displayed to the public, was selected and arranged to present a unique visual record of how the Alliance came together in 1955 for a spectacular display of unity to formally welcome their 15th member.

NATO Archives discloses documents related to the events in Poland 1987-1991

The June 1989 elections held in Poland are an important historical milestone that helped trigger the end of the Cold War. They were the first in a string of momentous events that signaled the beginning of the end of communist rule, first in Poland and then across Eastern Europe as former Soviet bloc countries each took their first steps toward democratic transition.
