NATO boosts its defence and deterrence posture

NATO Defence Ministers took steps to strengthen the Alliance defence and deterrence posture on Wednesday (10 February 2016). “NATO Defence Ministers agreed on an enhanced forward presence in the eastern part of our Alliance,” Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said. The enhanced forward presence will be “multinational, to make clear that an attack against one Ally is an attack against all Allies, and that the Alliance as a whole will respond,” he stressed.

NATO Defence Ministers to take key decisions to strengthen deterrence and defence

NATO Defence Ministers are meeting in Brussels on Wednesday (10 February 2016) to begin two days of talks on the Alliance’s continued adaptation in the face of growing security challenges. Today, Ministers are expected to agree on an enhanced forward presence in the eastern part of the Alliance. Discussions on NATO’s resilience and response to hybrid challenges, including cyber threats, will also be on the agenda, Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg told the media.

NATO and the European Union enhance cyber defence cooperation

NATO and the European Union face similar challenges in protecting their networks against the growing threat of cyber attacks. To help both organisations better meet this challenge, today a Technical Arrangement on Cyber Defence was concluded between the NATO Computer Incident Response Capability (NCIRC) and the Computer Emergency Response Team of the European Union (CERT-EU). The Technical Arrangement provides a framework for exchanging information and sharing best practices between emergency response teams.

Secretary General previews NATO Defence Ministers meeting

Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg briefed media on Tuesday (9 February 2016) on the topics of this week’s Defence Ministers meeting. On Wednesday and Thursday, ministers will take further steps to reinforce the Alliance’s collective defence and deterrence. “Effective deterrence and defence requires both forward presence of Allied forces, and our ability to reinforce them quickly,” said Mr. Stoltenberg. Ministers are expected to agree on an enhanced forward presence in the eastern part of the Alliance.

NATO Deputy Secretary General discusses partnership with Moldovan Foreign Minister

NATO Deputy Secretary General Alexander Vershbow and Moldovan Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrei Galbur met on Monday (8 February 2016) for talks on strengthening the partnership between the Alliance and Chișinău. Ambassador Vershbow thanked Moldova for its continued contributions to the Alliance-led mission in Kosovo and underlined that all NATO Allies support Moldova’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity.

NATO cooperation reaches fruition as new university opens in Armenia

The National Defense Research University (NDRU) opened its doors on 28 January, in Yerevan, Armenia. The opening of the NDRU is a product of close cooperation through NATO’s Defence Education Enhancement Programme (DEEP) and represents a major milestone in the transformation of the Armenian Armed Forces.
