Secretary General pays visit to Bucharest for talks with Romanian officials

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen discussed the Allied-led mission in Afghanistan, Smart Defence and NATO’s Open Door policy in talks with top Romanian government officials in Bucharest on Friday (24 May 2013). “Romania is a committed Ally and a strong contributor to our operations,” the Secretary General said. “The dedication and determination of your forces is displayed daily in Afghanistan and in Kosovo.”

NATO Secretary General addresses NATO Parliamentary Assembly in Luxembourg

The NATO-led mission in Afghanistan was a main point of discussion during the joint meeting of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly and the North Atlantic Council at the Assembly’s spring session, attended by NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen on Friday (17 May 2013) in Luxembourg. ''In 2001, Afghanistan was used as a launching pad by international terrorists to devastating effect. That launching pad is no more and the threat to our nations has been reduced. 169th NATO Chiefs of Defence meeting

NATO and Partners’ Chiefs of Defence will gather at NATO Headquarters on 14-15 May for the second Military Committee in Chiefs of Defence format of 2013. General Knud Bartels, Chairman of the Military Committee, will chair the discussions on NATO Transformation, Afghanistan post-2014, Kosovo and Special Partnerships. General Philip Breedlove, new Supreme Allied Commander, Europe (as of 13 May) and General Jean-Paul Paloméros, Supreme Allied Commander, Transformation will support sessions with their insights.

NATO Chiefs of Defence discuss Afghanistan, Partnerships and Transformation

Brussels – NATO Chiefs of Defence reaffirmed their commitment to support the ISAF Commander over the next 19 months, which will be crucial in determining the outcome of the mission. The Military Committee also discussed opportunities to deepen military-to-military cooperation with NATO Partners. Delving into transformation, they expressed support for ongoing and future initiatives, particularly Smart Defence and the Connected Forces, to achieve best value for money while building on lessons learned from operations.

United States Air Force General Philip Mark Breedlove took over command of NATO’s Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) from Admiral James Stavridis during a handover ceremony in Mons, Belgium on Monday ( 13 May 2013). "I am honoured to be here today for this handover ceremony to thank Admiral Stavridis for his outstanding contribution to transatlantic security and to welcome our new Supreme Allied Commander, General Breedlove, to the Alliance," said NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen, who attended the ceremony.
