NATO Secretary General statement on the attack on Mariupol

Fighting in eastern Ukraine has sharply escalated, with indications of a large-scale offensive by Russian-backed separatists at multiple locations in the Donetsk and Luhansk Oblasts as well as against the city of Mariupol. This is in utter disregard of the ceasefire. The shelling of residential areas in the city of Mariupol from separatist-controlled territory has cost the lives of at least 20 civilians, and injured many more.

Secretary General visits Bulgaria for talks on keeping NATO strong

During a visit to Sofia on Thursday (22 January 2015), NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg thanked Bulgaria for its contributions to the Alliance’s missions and operations, and stressed the need to keep NATO strong by implementing the Readiness Action Plan. After talks with President Rosen Plevneliev, the Secretary General praised Bulgaria’s role within the Alliance, saying “Bulgaria is a valued Ally”.

NATO Chiefs of Defence discuss the Readiness Action Plan, the Resolute Support Mission and Partnerships

Over the course of the two day session, the Chiefs of Defence provided clear military advice ahead of next month’s Defence Ministers meeting. They discussed the Readiness Action Plan and the future of the Resolute Support mission in Afghanistan. They also discussed continued and strengthened cooperation with partners and Strategic Military guidance for 2015.

''Romania is a strong Ally'' says NATO Secretary General

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg met with Romanian President Klaus Iohannis in Brussels on Friday (16 January 2015) to discuss the Alliance’s response to current security challenges and the importance of investing in defence. Mr Stoltenberg thanked President Iohannis for his personal commitment to the Alliance, Romania’s substantial contributions to NATO, and the recent decision to spend 2 % of Gross Domestic Product on defence by 2017. “Romania is a staunch and strong NATO Ally,” the Secretary General said.
