NATO launches Industry Cyber Partnership

On 17 September 2014, NATO launched an initiative to boost cooperation with the private sector on cyber threats and challenges. The NATO Industry Cyber Partnership (NICP) was presented at a two-day cyber conference held in Mons, Belgium, where 1500 industry leaders and policy makers gathered to discuss cyber collaboration.

General Breedlove thanks Spain for Patriot commitment

MONS, Belgium 18 September 2014 — General Philip M. Breedlove (Supreme Allied Commander Europe) thanked Spain for its recent decision to provide Patriot missile batteries and 130 soldiers to augment NATO’s defensive deployment in southern Turkey. The Alliance deployed six batteries in 2013 to augment Turkey's air defence capabilities to defend the population from ballistic missile threats emanating from the Syrian conflict.

Secretary General: Allies must stand united as a ‘force for freedom’

Keeping the Alliance strong could not be more important, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said in an address at Carnegie Europe in Brussels on Monday (15 September, 2014), as it faces an arc of crisis and instability stretching from the east to the south. “In this new age of unrest and revisionism, we must stand strong and we must stand united as a force for freedom,” he said.

A new Manfred Wörner Chair in Afghanistan

A newly created Manfred Wörner Chair for International Security Studies has been established in Kabul, Afghanistan. It has been set up at the Law and Political Science Faculty of Kabul University, in order to honour NATO’s achievements and sacrifices in the country through the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) and in memory of the former NATO Secretary General, Dr. Manfred Wörner, who led NATO’s transformation into a modern alliance.

NATO Exercise Steadfast Javelin II tests Allied interoperability

NATO-led Exercise Steadfast Javelin II wrapped up on Monday (8 September 2014) after a week of intensive training which involved over 2,000 troops from 10 Allied nations. The exercise, which took place in Estonia, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland, focused on strengthening interoperability between air and ground forces through airborne and air assault missions. "With this exercise NATO sent the clear message that it is committed and ready to protect member nations’ territory at any time,” General Hans-Lothar Domröse, Commander Joint Forces Command Brunssum (JFCB) said.
