NATO Secretary General welcomes new Supreme Allied Commander Europe

United States Army General Curtis M. Scaparrotti took over command of NATO’s Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) from General Philip M. Breedlove during a handover ceremony in Mons, Belgium on Wednesday (4 May 2016). Attending the ceremony, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg thanked General Breedlove for his outstanding contribution to transatlantic security and welcomed General Scaparrotti to the Alliance. “Today we have come to honour two great men, General Breedlove and General Scaparrotti. Men who personify the enduring bond between Europe and the United States,” said Mr. Stoltenberg.

NATO agrees Israel Mission to NATO

The North Atlantic Council has agreed ‎to accept the request that an official Israeli Mission be established at NATO headquarters. The Ambassador of Israel to the EU will therefore be the Head of the Mission of Israel to NATO.

NATO agrees Jordan Mission to NATO

The North Atlantic Council has agreed ‎to accept the request to accredit the Embassy of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan to Belgium as Mission to NATO. The Ambassador of Jordan to Belgium will therefore be the Head of the Mission of Jordan to NATO.

NATO Secretary General praises Albania’s role in strengthening shared security

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg welcomed Albanian President Bujar Nishani to NATO Headquarters on Thursday (28 April 2016) to discuss preparations for the Warsaw Summit. Speaking at a joint press conference with President Nishani, Mr. Stoltenberg praised Albania for its contributions to Allied security and for its role in strengthening stability in the Western Balkans.

Chairman of the NATO Military Committee in Sweden to discuss regional security and NATO-Swedish military cooperation

During his visit to Sweden (27 & 28 April), the Chairman of the NATO Military Committee, General Pavel met with Swedish Minister of Defence, Mr. Peter Hultqvist and Supreme Commander of the Swedish Armed Forces, General Micael Bydén to discuss regional security challenges and opportunities for enhanced military cooperation. The Chairman also had the opportunity to observe the Combined Joint Staff Exercise 2016 (CJSE 16) and visit the Life Guards Regiment, the Swedish Armed Forces International Centre and the Nordic Centre for Gender in Military Operations.

Chairman of the NATO Military Committee commends Finland for active military cooperation with NATO

During his two-day visit to Finland, the Chairman of the NATO Military Committee, General Petr Pavel met with the President of Finland, Mr Sauli Niinistö, Finnish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Timo Soini, Finnish Minister of Defence, Dr. Jussi Niinistö and Chief of Defence, General Jarmo Lindberg. Discussions focused on regional security and NATO-Finnish military cooperation and interoperability.

NATO Deputy Secretary General commends Romania’s strong commitment to the Alliance

NATO Deputy Secretary General Alexander Vershbow praised Romania’s long-standing contributions to Allied security, during the first day of his visit to Bucharest on Monday (25 April 2016). He commended Romania for its participation in NATO-led missions in Afghanistan and Kosovo, its contributions to Black Sea security and its commitment to raise defence spending to 2% of GDP. Ambassador Vershbow held bilateral talks with President Klaus Werner Iohannis, with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Lazăr Comănescu, and with the Minister of National Defence, Mr. Mihnea Motoc.

The NATO leadership runs for Gender Equality

On Saturday 23 April 2016, the NATO Headquarters hosted the first solidarity run “She Runs, He Runs, We Run” to raise awareness for the United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1325 on Women Peace and Security.
