NATO-funded Serbian researchers develop biofuel from algae

Eight Serbian scientists are leading a research project to develop the commercial production of biofuel from algae. The pioneering project is supported by the NATO Science for Peace and Security (SPS) Programme and is carried out by Belgrade’s Institute for Multidisciplinary Research in cooperation with Manchester University in the United Kingdom and Baylor University in the United States.

NATO Commander pays tribute to Afghanistan’s team heading to the Invictus Games

A torch lighting ceremony has been held in Kabul to honour Afghanistan’s team due to participate in the Invictus Games in Toronto (23 – 30 September 2017). The team of seven will compete with injured military personnel from around the world. The commander of NATO’s Resolute Support Mission, General John W. Nicholson, said the team of Afghans “represent a better future.”

NATO releases the Resource Policy and Planning Board’s 2016 Annual Report

NATO’s Resource Policy and Planning Board (RPPB) published its 2016 Annual Report on Thursday (20 July 2017). The RPPB is a subsidiary body of the North Atlantic Council and has a lead policy and planning role in all NATO military common funded resource areas. The Annual Report analyses how NATO’s common-funded resources support approved Alliance objectives and priorities; assesses the performance of military common funding; and reviews the financial situation of the NATO Security Investment Programme and the Civil and Military Budgets.

NATO provides swift forest fire assistance to new Ally Montenegro

NATO Allies and partners are providing aircraft and helicopters to help Montenegro deal with forest fires in the Lustica peninsula. Montenegro approached NATO’s Euro-Atlantic Disaster Response Coordination Centre (EADRCC) for assistance on Monday (17 July 2017), and the request was immediately circulated to NATO Allies and partners. A Ukrainian fire-fighting aircraft Antonov 32P has been in Montenegro since Tuesday, and two helicopters – contributed by Bulgaria and Switzerland – arrived in Montenegro on Wednesday. Two more fire-fighting aircraft will be deployed from Israel in the coming days.
